Note: Paper drills can NOT be used i a„normal“ drill, but only in special paper drills. Paper drills are equipped with a corresponding drill chuck that can both accommodate this type of shank and ensure ejection for the paper shreds that have to be transported upwards in the drill (hollow drill) and discharged through the drill holder.
ATTENTION: If this is not ensured, the drill can tear open and burst during drilling. In these cases there is a high risk of injury!
Paper drilling is an industrial process in print finishing (e.g. in bookbinderies, printers, copy shops) in which stacks of paper or other materials such as cardboard, paperboard, plastic film, aluminium foil, textiles, rubber or leather are usually provided with round holes or punched in order to file them for storage or archiving. The paper drills are the tools for paper-drilling-machines, with which the filing holes are made or holes are made in the material to be processed.
Another method for making filing holes is punching, as known from the common office punching machines. Here, however, usually only single sheets or very low stacks can be processed. In contrast, paper drilling machines can be loaded with complete stacks and these can be drilled in one operation. Paper drilling machines can be equipped with different numbers of spindles. For example, we offer one/two and four-spindle drilling machines.
In print finishing there are many applications where paper drills and paper drills are used.
Common applications are, for example, filing holes for pages, stacks of paper to prepare brochures, loose-leaf collections, writing pads or ring binder inserts for filing in folders, ring binders or similar. Perforations for decorative purposes are also conceivable, although they are used less frequently.
Buy high quality paper drills
The result of drilling is significantly influenced by the quality of the tool. For this reason, high-quality paper drills are a prerequisite for successful work as well as for high-quality end products.
Our RM brand paper drills are high-quality tools of excellent quality that are suitable for various paper drilling machines. We also stock NAGEL paper drills. Our drills are available in all common hole diameters, different useful lengths as well as different qualities with and without coatings.
The different types each have specific properties and are therefore suitable for drilling different materials. Below you will find a brief overview. You can find our drill guide here
RM paper drills high-performance steel (HSS) or also called HSS drills, are made of high-quality tool steel without coating and are best suited for drilling offset paper, copy paper as well as carbon copy paper on all common machines. This is a standard quality that can be used in many ways and is characterised by a favourable price-performance ratio. The comparable NAGEL drill is the NAGEL paper drill grade 1.
RM Balinit Hard Carbon (PVD) is a high-quality all-rounder for paper drilling. It combines the strengths of our paper drills sliding layer (RT-1) and hard chrome (HC). RM Balinit Hard Carbo paper drills have excellent properties at a favourable price and thus offer a high price-performance ratio. The BALINIT® HARD CARBON PVD coating is very thin, smooth and extremely hard. Therefore, the coating is very wear-resistant and stable even on hard materials (coated papers, cardboard, etc.). The cutting edge remains sharp for longer, i.e. the service life of the drill is increased or the tool costs are reduced. Due to the low coefficient of friction, the drill does not heat up so quickly, which makes it ideal for drilling temperature-sensitive materials (foils, etc.). At the same time, adhesions are avoided or reduced due to the smooth coating surface. Particularly suitable for drilling self-adhesive foils and papers, coated and laminated papers, OHP foils as well as transparent papers, coated and laminated cardboards, plastics and rubber.
RM paper drills (HSS) channelled / fluted are high quality standard paper drills coated with dry polymer lubricants to reduce the coefficient of friction. This improves the sliding properties and corrosion resistance. They have four vertical grooves inside the shank to crush chips. The grooves compress the chips for easy ejection. Ideal for drilling hard materials such as cardboard, paperboard and chipboard.
RM textile drills for paper drilling machines are high quality standard Textile drills coated with dry polymer lubricants to reduce the coefficient of friction. This improves the sliding properties and corrosion resistance. The bevelled edge makes it easier for the Textile drill to penetrate the material being drilled without tearing or damaging it. The bevelled edge helps to reduce resistance and ensures a clean hole edge. Are bevelled on the cutting edge and are best suited for drilling fabric, cloth, leather.
RM paper drills titanium (TiN) or also called titanium drills are made of high-quality special steel with a silver TiN coating. The titanium-nitride coating is characterised by very high hardness (2400 HV), very high wear resistance and good dissipation of frictional heat, which enables the titanium drills (TiN) to achieve long service lives. They are particularly suitable for drilling carbonless paper, aluminium foil as well as offset paper, copying paper, recycled paper, cardboard, paperboard and, to a limited extent, textiles and rubber.
RM paper drills sliding layer (RT-1) are made of high-quality special steel with a coating of nanoparticles. This results in lower frictional resistance and thus reduces the heating of the drill. With temperature-sensitive materials such as foil and plastic, sticking is avoided. They are therefore particularly suitable for drilling coated papers, laminated papers, plastic films and to a limited extent also for textiles and rubber. The RM paper drills sliding layer are an excellent, environmentally friendly and inexpensive alternative to Teflon paper drills.
RM paper drills hard chrome (HC) are provided with a wear-resistant hard chrome coating and are characterised by a high hardness (1000 HV). The high hardness results in less wear, less friction and reduced heating. They are particularly suitable for drilling coated papers and carbonless papers as well as for offset/copy paper, cardboard, paperboard and plastic films (PVC, PE).
NAGEL paper drills Variety 1 [No longer available] are made of high-performance steel without coating and are ideally suited for drilling offset paper, copy paper, recycled paper as well as cardboard and paperboard on all common paper drilling machines. This is a standard quality that can be used in many ways and is characterised by a favourable price-performance ratio. The comparable RM drill is the RM paper drills high-performance steel (HSS).
NAGEL paper drills HD (HighTight) [No longer available] are made of high-performance steel, have a special high-density coating and are ideally suited for drilling coated papers, digital printing papers and cardboard. The high hardness results in less wear, less friction and reduced heating. They are particularly wear-resistant and suitable for extreme loads and continuous use.
